Marvão

The human eagle's-nest among the vulture crags

Marvão, a fortified medieval village on a high granite cliff above the Alentejo plain at golden hour

If the site has one perfect image of its whole idea, it's this: a fortified town on the highest crest of the Serra de São Mamede, walls and castle wrapped around bare rock, looking deep into Spain.

People chose this eyrie for exactly the reason the vultures choose theirs — to see and not be surprised. Marvão is the human eagle's-nest, set among the real ones.

The crest

The medieval castle (rebuilt under King Dinis) crowns a ridge inhabited since prehistory, its walls hugging the granite. From the battlements the whole borderland opens out — sierra, plain and the line of Spain beyond. The name itself comes from Ibn Maruán, the 9th-century chief who held this height and styled himself lord of the ruined Roman city below.

Where the birds come in

There may be no better raptor-watch in the region than these walls: Griffon Vultures and Bonelli's Eagle ride the air at or below your eye, on the same thermals the town was built to overlook. Pair a morning in the Serra de São Mamede with an afternoon on the crest.
